Gins of the Week: Singapore Gins🍸🇸🇬

With its storied history, Gin has found a vibrant home in Singapore 🇸🇬. Once a key hub in the global spice trade, the island introduced botanicals like clove and nutmeg—essential gin ingredients. Fast forward to 2018, and Singapore saw the birth of its first artisanal gin distillery, Tanglin Gin, sparking a dynamic gin scene that blends tradition with multicultural innovation.

Here are our picks for you from Singapore that pack a tropical punch in the Gins

  2. Brass Lion Singapore Dry Gin 🍋🌿
Flavor Notes: A zesty, spicy profile with lemongrass, ginger flower, and mandarin peel. Why Try It: Perfectly captures Singapore’s multicultural essence.
  3. Singapore Distillery Lime Garden Gin 🍈🌼
Flavor Notes: Bright citrus tones from Southeast Asian limes with floral undertones. Why Try It: A refreshing tropical gin, ideal for warm weather.
  4. Rojak Gin by Compendium Spirits 🍍🌺
Flavor Notes: Sweet and tangy, inspired by the Singaporean dish ‘Rojak,’ with tamarind and torch ginger. Why Try It: A culinary-inspired gin that’s truly one of a kind.
  5. The Orientalist Gunpowder Gin 🌶️🍋
Flavor Notes: Bold and spicy with Sichuan peppercorn, omija berries, and Asian lime.
Why Try It: A premium gin for adventurous flavor journeys.

Story: Singapore Sling 🍒

In the early 20th century, the elegant Raffles Hotel in Singapore was a social hub for British colonials and travelers. Amidst this backdrop, bartender Ngiam Tong Boon crafted a unique cocktail tailored for the hotel's female patrons, who were expected to avoid strong spirits in public. To discreetly offer them an alcoholic beverage, Ngiam created a pink-hued drink resembling fruit juice, combining gin, cherry brandy, and herbal liqueurs. This inventive concoction became known as the Singapore Sling.

The Singapore Sling's delightful blend of sweet and tart flavors quickly gained popularity, extending beyond Raffles Hotel to become a symbol of Singapore's vibrant social scene. Over time, the recipe evolved, with variations incorporating pineapple juice, lime juice, and grenadine, enhancing its fruity profile. Despite these changes, the cocktail's essence—a refreshing gin-based drink with a distinctive rosy hue—remained intact.

Today, the Singapore Sling is a testament to Singapore's rich cultural heritage and the ingenuity of its early bartenders. Visitors worldwide continue to enjoy this iconic cocktail, often returning to the historic Long Bar at Raffles Hotel to savor an authentic rendition. The Singapore Sling offers a taste of history and embodies the timeless allure of Singapore's cosmopolitan charm.

Masterclass: Gin Botanicals🧑‍🔬

Welcome to our Gin Botanicals Masterclass! Today, we'll explore the essential ingredients that give gin its distinctive character. Understanding these botanicals will enhance your appreciation of this versatile spirit.
Let's dive in!

Juniper Berries 🌿

  • Role in Gin: Juniper is the defining botanical of gin, providing its signature pine-like flavor.
  • Flavor Profile: Fresh, resinous, and slightly sweet with hints of citrus.
  • Interesting Fact: The word "gin" is derived from "genièvre" (French) or "jenever" (Dutch), both meaning juniper.

Coriander Seeds 🌾

  • Role in Gin: Second only to juniper, coriander adds complexity and balance.
  • Flavor Profile: Citrusy with spicy, nutty, and slightly peppery notes.
  • Interesting Fact: Coriander's citrus character complements juniper, enhancing gin's overall flavor.

Angelica Root 🌱

  • Role in Gin: Acts as a binding agent, harmonizing other botanicals.
  • Flavor Profile: Earthy, woody, with a hint of bitterness.
  • Interesting Fact: Angelica root is also used in traditional medicine and liqueurs like Chartreuse.

Orris Root 🌸

  • Role in Gin: Fixative that stabilizes volatile flavors and adds depth.
  • Flavor Profile: Floral, violet-like aroma with earthy undertones.
  • Interesting Fact: Derived from the iris plant, orris root is aged for up to five years before use.

Citrus Peels (Lemon & Orange) 🍋🍊

  • Role in Gin: Introduce bright, zesty notes that uplift the spirit.
  • Flavor Profile: Fresh, tangy, and aromatic, adding a refreshing quality.
  • Interesting Fact: Both sweet and bitter orange peels are used to achieve different flavor nuances.
